PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS

• Engine Swaps & Upgrades are very common when restoring Land Rover Defenders. The first decision is what sort of engine do you want. Gas or diesel. What do you want to achieve, more power, fuel type swap or both? Does originality matter to you?
  • A 4.6L Rover V8 upgrades your Land Rover Defender while keeping it very original. This bolt in engine yields around 240 horsepower and 300ft lbs of torque right out of the box..  
  • Cummins R2.8L is a great choice for those looking for an EPA certified diesel engine. It can be installed with either a manual or automatic transmission. The install is complex but the end result gives you a brand new Cummins engine that is reliable & has great drivability.
  • GM LS is the engine of choice if looking for a significant power upgrade. It can either be paired with a manual or automatic transmission and provides modern levels of power, reliability & smoothness.
• Transmission Changes
  • The single most common Transmission request we get is for a Land Rover manual to Automatic Conversion. Using as many factory parts as possible will mean that the conversion looks factory and Land Rover like.
• Transfer Case
  • The Land Rover LT230 Transfer Cases really are strong and reliable so often cleaning them up and resealing them is often all that is needed but, if there are other problems, we rebuild them.
• Differentials
  • Gearing - If you have increased the tire size on your vehicle and have noticed a depreciable drop in power the easiest way to get that power back is by regearing your front and rear axles. As we go through the planning process, let us know if changing tire sizes is something that you have or are considering.  Avoiding back tracking helps keep costs down and speeds up the restoration process.
  • Lockers - If you like to take your Defender Off-Road and are seeking traction aids then lockers are a valuable upgrade. By locking both your front & rear diffs will ensure that all 4 wheels turn at the same speed consistently. This enhancement along with a good set of tires will yield the best results for increasing your traction while driving Off-Highway.
• Wheels & Tires
  • While the wheels and tires don't make the restoration they are a detail that needs to be considered up front.
• Exhaust
  • When restoring a Defender we are always aiming to make everything as corrosion proof as possible so the Defender can be used for many years to come with minimal deterioration. A stainless exhaust is always on the list of upgrades.
• Suspension
  • The original Defender suspension works very well but can be upgraded for certain applications:
    • If larger tires are going to be fitted.
    • If you plan to use it off road a lot we can install suspension that will allow more travel.
